Honeycomb

Worker honey bees make hives to store honey and feed themselves throughout winter when they cannot go outdoors to forage for food. The glands of worker bees convert the sugar contents of honey into wax, which oozes through the bee’s small pores to produce tiny flakes of wax on their abdomens. Workers chew these pieces of wax until they become soft and moldable, and then add the chewed wax to the honeycomb construction

The honeycomb structure comprises of a series of hexagonal cells created from beeswax usually containing raw honey. It can take about 7 days to 2 months for bees to make their honeycomb. In about 7 days from the early build up and moving in, honeybees can add from 1 to 3 pounds of honeycomb inside the structure.

Honey Comb IS Loaded with Minerals

Honeycomb is comprised of minerals, vitamins, pollen, and protein. When you go to town on honeycomb, it can deliver minerals like:

  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Sodium Chloride
  • Potassium

The specific mineral amounts vary based on the honey itself, as different flora will produce different levels.

Different Ways To Eat Honeycomb

1. COMB WITH CHEESE
Pair your honeycomb with any type of cheese you’d like for a quick snack or a party tray. Take your charcuterie board to the next level. Gather an assortment of crackers and sliced baguette. Lay out your various cheeses. Add a few extra touches, like a handful of toasted almonds, dried apricots, and a bunch of grapes. Add the honeycomb directly to the board, allowing honey to pool into the nearby cheeses. Pop a bottle of red wine for an ultimate experience.

2. SPREAD ON BREAD
Because of the unique texture of the comb, your honey will easily spread over your toast in a thick layer without the drip. Try layering your Honey & Comb over toast, scones, or on a baguette. You can even add meats or cheeses to make a sweet and savory sandwich.

3. REINVENT FRUIT SALAD
Arrange fresh, sliced peaches around soft burrata cheese. Top the burrata with a hefty chunk of honeycomb to bind the fruit and creaminess together. Feel free to incorporate other seasonal fruits as well.

4. COMB IN BATTER
Pancakes, scones, and waffles with honey chunks? Yes please. Saveur uses their honeycomb mixed into scone batter before baking. They also fold honeycomb into ricotta and served over pancakes and waffles.

5. SIMPLY COMB
Remember, one of the most delicious ways to enjoy honeycomb is simply by itself. Take a spoon and dig in! We hope you enjoy!

6. SPICE UP YOGURT
Try this as an alternative to granola. Where granola tends to have a lot of added sugars, honeycomb sweet is all natural. It gives a similar texture of crunch as the granola. Remember, when selecting yogurt, go for a more plain style – such as unsweetened greek yogurt. Most yogurts have a lot of added sugar. When you add honeycomb, you get a natural sweetness that is still satisfying – but way healthier.as well.
